At the turn of the century Emile Gallé employed over three hundred men in his glass and furniture workshops in Nancy, France. A passionate botanist, Gallé's work features decorative forms inspired by nature and the faithful observation of flowers and insects. Gallé's furniture is renowned for the intricacy and delicacy of marquetry (inlaid wood) decoration made with European and exotic woods drawn from a stock of some 600 veneers.
